Does the silver economy speak to you? We’re not going to talk about money (though…) but about hair color! And yes: the silver economy, or the economy of seniors, represents all the activities, markets and economic issues related to people over 60 years of age. This notion appears in the early 2000s, when we realize that the “Baby-boom” generation is storming into retirement. In the age of the Grandpa-boom, multiple issues and the entire economy revolve around a target with specific needs. Discover the silver economy and the adapted solutions with Augias.
Boomers becoming Zoomers
What is the profile of the senior today?
Age and savings rate grow together. The silver economy is born from this observation: people from the Baby-boom have a very high level of solvency. It is in full expansion, as the Boomers are gradually entering a period of retirement.
But with the evolution of medicine, we are living longer on almost every continent. The retirement age, for its part, does not match the average life expectancy (81 years in 2013 and 86 years by 2050). Hence the entrenchment of part of the population in a specific age range: the Papy-boom.
Towards gerontocroissance in France?
According to INSEE, 13 million “65 years or over” in 2018 is a forecast of a quarter of the population for 2050. Areas popular with this age group: Occitanie and Hauts-de-France. The active / retired ratio goes from 28% in 2013 to 46% expected in 2050.
To describe the target of the senior generation, their state of health, their state of dependence and their care as well as their estimated income are studied. An elderly person in France today is at one end of a mass market: very rich, or very poor.

At the start of 2000, the WHO boosted its “age-friendly city” project through solutions adapted to the third and fourth age, both in terms of products and personal services. In the 2010s, marketing strategies focused on this consumer windfall. The government is also interested in promoting the opportunity that is the silver economy and removing any obstacles.
In 2013, a sector contract was therefore accepted between the players and then faced with the concrete facts of the aging of the population, a law promoting the adaptation of society to aging was passed in 2015.

... attract start-ups that innovate in the social and solidarity economy
People over 60 have resources, and they consume! With all the spotlight of marketers, mutual funds and start-up companies focused on them, they become the great object of consumer and prospect studies.
According to the estimate of Serge Guérin, professor at INSEEC Paris in 2020, the silver economy would represent close to 130 billion euros in France.
1.4 million professionals in personal assistance for 4 million households: in 2022, 2.8 million households will be added and the sector will recruit nearly 1 million additional jobs. Augias is part of this landscape as the benchmark in the personal services professions.
Thus, the silver economy mixes social and societal in all sectors. With age, needs change (mobility, nutrition, home care, housing, autonomy or even digital relations and new technologies). Companies are entering this field to bring innovative ideas as solutions to the problems that have affected us, affect us, or will affect us all.
